20 November 2025

The NFCS-funded project “Inclusive Futures: User stories and mapping pathways for National Federated Compute Services” has published “Inclusive Futures of Federated Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI). A Scoping Review of Cultural Challenges to Federation“, which explores the key cultural challenges to the federation of compute services and data.

This report provides:

  • A summary of five themes identified in the literature: 1) Disciplinary silos; 2) Epistemic diversity; 3) Trust and control; 4) Resistance; 5) Power asymmetries.
  • The notion of inclusiveness deployed
  • A discussion of the gaps in the literature and the implications for the national federation of DRIs.

If you’re interested in understanding the cultural challenges to federation of DRI, this is a must-read.
